UPDATE: The Library Foundation SD has just announced the opening of its second bookstore in Mission Hills, revitalizing the former Mission Hills Public Library location. The grand opening took place on Monday, bringing an independent neighborhood shop to the corner of West Washington and Hawk streets.
This new bookstore, named Library Shop Mission Hills, aims to foster a love for reading while highlighting local and LGBTQ+ authors. Patrick Stewart, CEO of Library Foundation SD, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We are proud to be part of the resurgence of independent bookstores in San Diego and around the U.S.”
The bookstore is not just a retail space; it serves as a community hub. “Turning the former Mission Hills Library into a bookshop and community gathering space is a win for this neighborhood,” remarked San Diego City Councilman Stephen Whitburn. He emphasized the importance of the bookstore in rejuvenating the area and supporting local culture.
Library Shop Mission Hills will offer a curated selection of new books, gifts for book lovers, and special displays for local authors, staff recommendations, and significant works by LGBTQ+ authors—reflecting its proximity to the historic “gayborhood” of Hillcrest. The foundation’s efforts also include showcasing banned books to combat censorship.
The site previously housed the library before its relocation approximately half a mile away, at Washington and Front streets. The Library Foundation SD opened its first shop in 2013 at the San Diego Central Library, which has successfully supported the library system through philanthropy and advocacy.
The bookstore’s launch is a crucial moment for the community, allowing all San Diegans to show their support for libraries and local authors. As part of its mission, the Library Foundation SD is dedicated to enhancing the San Diego Public Library system through innovative outreach and engagement.
What’s Next: Residents can look forward to upcoming author events and speaking tours hosted at the new bookstore, fostering a vibrant literary community. The Library Shop Mission Hills promises to be a beacon of culture and community spirit in the heart of Mission Hills.
This is an exciting development for book lovers and supporters of local literature—share the news and support your community bookstore!
