Local Nonagenarian to Illuminate Hazleton Christmas Tree Wednesday

URGENT UPDATE: A local nonagenarian, Clemie Yamona, will light the Hazleton Christmas tree this Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at 4:30 p.m. on the front steps of Hazleton City Hall. This heartwarming event marks a special occasion as Yamona prepares to celebrate her 96th birthday just days later.

Yamona, a daughter of Italian immigrants, has deep roots in the Hazleton community. She graduated from Hazleton High School in 1945 and became the first female class president. Her legacy continues as she was also the first female council member in Hazleton, serving from 1972 to 1976.

In addition to her trailblazing political career, Yamona has been a passionate advocate for health and community welfare. She founded the American Cancer Society’s Greater Hazleton Unit Telethon and recently held the position of Honorary Chair for the 47th Annual Telethon on November 15.
