Governor Mifflin Fourth Graders Launch New Businesses in Symposium

URGENT UPDATE: Governor Mifflin fourth graders just unveiled their innovative business projects in the annual business symposium at Brecknock Elementary School, held on November 21. A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the launch of their simulated businesses, showcasing the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of young students.

The students created businesses like GMIS Care Cart and Mustang Keystone as part of a unique educational initiative named “Sweet Read City.” This fictional mini-city is designed to fit within the library’s shelves and serves as a practical learning environment for vital concepts such as the economy, entrepreneurship, and community interdependence.

According to Rachel Sebastian, a librarian at Brecknock and organizer of the symposium, “Sweet Read City” provides essential infrastructure for a student-centered library while also teaching real-world applications of business knowledge. “Experiences like the business symposium not only provide immersive, real-world learning but also nurture innovative, community-minded solutions,” she stated.

Students spent months connecting with local businesses, including Classic Harley Davidson, East Penn Manufacturing, Schlouch Inc., and Goodwill Industries. Through these partnerships, fourth graders learned about the goods and services provided by these companies and explored career opportunities available in their communities.

The culmination of this project allows students to demonstrate their acquired knowledge by adding new businesses to Sweet Read City, modeled after actual local enterprises. The symposium includes keynote speeches where students present their business ideas and insights gained throughout the project.

This year’s event was not just about showcasing their work; it was a celebration of learning beyond the classroom walls. Local business owners played a pivotal role in guiding students through this educational journey, enhancing their understanding of entrepreneurship from real-world experts.

With the successful execution of the symposium, the Governor Mifflin School District continues to emphasize the importance of experiential learning, fostering skills that will benefit the community for years to come.

WHAT’S NEXT: The community can look forward to more innovative projects as Brecknock Elementary students continue exploring the intersection of education and entrepreneurship. This event highlights the potential of young minds when given the opportunity to engage with local businesses, creating a ripple effect of knowledge and inspiration.
