Bell Canada has made significant strides in enhancing its 5G network capabilities by deploying mid-band spectrum in parts of Ontario. The introduction of the 3,800 MHz spectrum aims to provide users with improved data rates and supports the company’s ongoing efforts to develop its 5G-Advanced infrastructure. This deployment is expected to benefit users with compatible smartphones from major brands such as Apple, Samsung, and Google.
The new mid-band spectrum deployment is projected to deliver a remarkable 65 percent increase in data rates for users compared to the previous performance of Bell’s network. According to the company, peak downlink speeds can reach up to 3.6 Gb/s, significantly enhancing the user experience for activities such as streaming, cloud gaming, and real-time augmented reality collaboration.
Expansion Across Southern Ontario
Bell’s rollout covers several key areas in southern Ontario, including the major cities of Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, and Hamilton. This development builds on a test deployment of the 3,800 MHz spectrum that took place in Toronto and Kitchener-Waterloo earlier this year. The company acquired these frequencies for CAD 2.8 billion (approximately $2 billion) during an auction held in 2023.
Mark McDonald, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Bell, emphasized the importance of this move. “The deployment complements our ongoing investments in a 5G-Advanced infrastructure,” he stated. McDonald further highlighted the anticipated improvements in service quality, particularly in areas such as entertainment and enterprise artificial intelligence services.
