Russia Launches Massive Drone and Missile Attack on Ukraine

UPDATE: Russia has launched a significant missile and drone attack on Ukraine, deploying 653 drones and 51 missiles overnight. This aggressive move comes as U.S. and Ukrainian officials prepare for a critical third day of diplomatic talks aimed at ending the nearly four-year conflict.

The barrage triggered air raid alerts across Ukraine, coinciding with the country’s Armed Forces Day. Ukrainian air defense successfully intercepted 585 drones and 30 missiles, though the assault resulted in at least eight injuries, including three in the Kyiv region, according to Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko. Reports of drone sightings extended as far west as the Lviv region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, highlighting that energy facilities were primary targets, with a drone strike reportedly causing significant damage to a train station in the city of Fastiv. The national energy operator, Ukrenergo, confirmed that the attack focused on power stations and energy infrastructure across multiple regions.

Simultaneously, Russian authorities claimed that their air defenses intercepted 116 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory during the same period. A Russian Telegram channel alleged that Ukraine struck the Ryazan Oil Refinery, sharing footage of flames and smoke, although independent verification by the Associated Press remains unavailable. The governor of Ryazan, Pavel Malkov, reported damage to a residential building and drone debris near an industrial facility but did not confirm the refinery’s involvement.

For months, Ukrainian forces have targeted Russian oil refineries in an effort to disrupt Moscow’s funding for the ongoing war. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials accuse Russia of intentionally attacking the power grid, aiming to deny civilians essential services like heat, light, and running water as winter looms.

The ongoing military actions coincide with high-stakes diplomatic discussions, where U.S. President Donald Trump’s advisors and Ukrainian representatives are attempting to establish a security framework for postwar Ukraine. Following two days of discussions in Florida, officials indicated that any substantial progress will depend on Russia’s willingness to commit to a long-term peace agreement.

U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner emphasized the importance of Russia’s genuine commitment during a joint statement, reflecting the cautious optimism that emerged from the negotiations.

As the situation develops, the urgency of both military and diplomatic efforts underscores the complex landscape facing Ukraine and its allies. The international community watches closely to see if peace can be achieved amid escalating violence and humanitarian concerns.
