Jingle Bell Dash Raises Funds for LGBTQ+ Youth Programs

UPDATE: The Jingle Bell Dash in Kingston, N.Y., just concluded, with over 40 runners participating in festive attire to support vital LGBTQ+ youth outreach programs. Taking place on December 9, 2023, the event successfully raised funds for the Hudson Valley LGBTQ+ Community Center’s “Gen Q” initiatives, which provide essential resources for local youth.

The run kicked off at North Front Street, guiding participants through a quick eight-block tour of Kingston’s historic Stockade District. Despite chilly temperatures, runners bundled up, with some opting for daringly minimal outfits, all in the spirit of holiday cheer. Many participants fueled up with pre-run espresso martinis at nearby Hotel Kinsley, showcasing a festive camaraderie.

This year’s event marked the second annual Jingle Bell Dash, inspired by similar community gatherings like the Santa Speedo Sprint in Albany. Event co-director Stephan Hengst expressed excitement over the turnout, noting it was double that of last year’s inaugural event. “It’s fun, it’s goofy. It’s great visibility for the queer community,” Hengst stated. “Let’s get people out to celebrate the holidays and raise funds for the center’s programs.”

The funds raised will directly support the Gen Q youth programs at the Hudson Valley LGBTQ+ Community Center. Executive Director Richard Heyl de Ortiz emphasized the importance of these services, saying, “We’re always here when a young person comes in, just to talk to someone. We also do school outreach to help staff support LGBTQ+ students.”

Additionally, the center hosts a “Gen Z Drop-in” event, providing a safe space for LGBTQ+ youth to connect and share experiences. Hengst aims to expand the event’s reach, with a goal of attracting 100 participants next year. “Everyone participating today helped raise funds to keep these programs going and to grow these programs,” he added.

The Jingle Bell Dash not only serves as a fundraiser but also fosters a sense of community and support for LGBTQ+ youth. To learn more about the Jingle Bell Dash or to support the Hudson Valley LGBTQ+ Community Center, visit lgbtqcenter.org or biggayhudsonvalley.com.
