Hulu Reveals Cast for ‘The Testaments’ Spinoff of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

Hulu is set to expand its acclaimed series with the introduction of a spinoff titled The Testaments, based on Margaret Atwood‘s novel. This new chapter will delve deeper into the dystopian world established in The Handmaid’s Tale, which first premiered in 2017. The spinoff will feature both returning and new cast members, promising to explore the intricate dynamics of Gilead’s oppressive regime.

The original series, adapted from Atwood’s 1985 novel, depicted a future marked by declining fertility rates, leading to women being assigned to men for reproduction. The show has garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase, with key performances from Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, and Ann Dowd, among others. As the flagship series approaches its final season, creator Bruce Miller has transitioned to focus on The Testaments, while executive producers Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang assume daily operations of the original show.

“The Testaments is certainly going to be a sequel to the show,” Miller stated to TVLine. He emphasized that while the new series will be rooted in Atwood’s universe, it will diverge in storytelling to provide fresh perspectives. Set 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, the new series will center on Aunt Lydia, who will narrate the unfolding events as new characters emerge.

New Characters and Cast Members

The narrative will introduce audiences to characters such as Agnes, a young woman raised in Gilead, and Daisy, a Canadian teenager who becomes pivotal in resisting Gilead’s authoritarian rule. Both characters will engage in secretive operations to gather and smuggle information about the regime. Agnes and Daisy will masquerade as “Pearl Girls” in Canada, while Aunt Lydia serves as a covert ally from within Gilead.

Atwood has expressed her enthusiasm for the new direction, stating, “Although I could not continue with the story of Offred, I could continue with three other people concerned in these events and tell the story of the beginning of the end, because we know from The Handmaid’s Tale that Gilead vanishes.” She further noted the importance of visual storytelling, mentioning new costume designs that reflect the characters’ identities and societal roles.

The cast of The Testaments includes:
Ann Dowd returning as Aunt Lydia, who will play a crucial role in Gilead’s internal conflicts.
Chase Infiniti portraying Agnes, who becomes involved in the resistance against Gilead.
Lucy Halliday as Daisy, whose life dramatically shifts as she joins the fight against oppression.
Rowan Blanchard playing Shunammite, a privileged young woman in Gilead whose fate intertwines with Agnes and Daisy.
Mattea Conforti as Becka, a character described as kind and shy, who becomes an ally.
Mabel Li taking on the role of Aunt Vidala, a powerful figure within Gilead.
Amy Seimetz playing Paula, Agnes’ harsh stepmother.

The spinoff aims to further explore the complex themes of power, resistance, and identity, while maintaining the intense storytelling that fans have come to expect. As the world of Gilead continues to evolve, viewers can anticipate a thrilling narrative that challenges the status quo.

With a release date yet to be announced, anticipation builds for The Testaments as fans eagerly await to see how this new chapter unfolds within Atwood’s hauntingly relevant universe.
