Police Launch Urgent Holiday DWI Crackdown Across Texas

UPDATE: Texas law enforcement agencies are implementing a STRONG crackdown on drunken driving during the holiday season, a time notorious for increased alcohol-related crashes. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has just launched its statewide “Drive Sober. No Regrets” campaign, urging all Texans to prioritize safety by avoiding driving after drinking and planning for a sober ride.

This campaign runs from December 12 through January 1, coinciding with heightened DWI enforcement across the state. In 2024, Texas reported over 2,000 drunken-driving crashes, leading to 96 fatalities and 201 serious injuries, according to TxDOT statistics. Officials are emphasizing that these tragic incidents are preventable and can result in devastating long-term consequences—physically, emotionally, and financially.

A first-time DWI conviction can impose fines reaching up to $17,000, alongside legal costs and increased insurance premiums. The Garland Police Department and several other law enforcement agencies in North Texas are stepping up DWI patrols during this critical period, utilizing both marked and unmarked units during nighttime hours.

Authorities confirm that the financial repercussions of a DWI extend beyond fines. Additional expenses, such as bail, attorney fees, and mandatory court programs, can inflate the total cost to upwards of $17,000. As a result, TxDOT and local police agencies are offering crucial safety recommendations to help citizens celebrate responsibly.

The Dallas County DWI taskforce is enhancing its efforts by providing English and Spanish-language digital ads that include QR codes for Lyft discounts of $20 or more. This initiative aims to encourage responsible holiday celebrations and secure rides home.

With the festive season in full swing, officials stress the importance of being vigilant. The message is clear: drive sober or prepare to face life-altering consequences.
