New Lenox Library Launches Care Cabinet to Fight Community Need

UPDATE: The New Lenox Public Library has just launched a vital care cabinet, providing essential items and Narcan to the community, as of December 4, 2023. This initiative addresses urgent needs for individuals hesitant to seek help directly, confirming the library’s role as a crucial support system.

The care cabinet offers a range of free resources including shower products, deodorant, toothpaste, gloves, chap stick, first-aid supplies, socks, and Narcan, the medication used to reverse opioid overdoses. Executive Director Michelle Krooswyk highlighted the library’s commitment to serving the community beyond literary needs, stating, “We want to be welcoming to you and we want to support you.”

Originally set to open in January 2026, the cabinet’s launch was accelerated due to cuts in federal programs affecting lower-income residents. Administrative Library Coordinator Melissa Seaberg emphasized the importance of providing assistance without judgment: “Sometimes asking for help can be a sensitive topic,” she noted.

The demand for the care cabinet is evident, with many items already depleted, particularly lip balm, gloves, and deodorant. This reflects the pressing needs within the community, as noted by Seaberg. The library has partnered with the Heroin Epidemic Relief Organization to distribute Narcan, ensuring that life-saving resources are readily available.

Krooswyk has encouraged community members to attend training sessions on Narcan, highlighting its potential to save lives. The library’s swift response to community needs has prompted residents to contribute supplies, leading to the need for regulated donations to maintain hygiene standards. Monetary donations can be made via the library’s website or through an Amazon wish list.

The inspiration for the care cabinet came from a presentation by the Rock Island Public Library, emphasizing collaboration among libraries to enhance community support. Krooswyk remarked, “We just like to find and share ways to support the community.”

The cabinet will remain open indefinitely during library hours, providing a consistent resource for those in need. Additionally, a crocheted cat fundraiser, inspired by a lighthearted community engagement idea, supports the care cabinet and ends on December 16, 2023.

Looking ahead, the New Lenox Library, which celebrated a successful referendum for funding, plans to unveil a new café space in January and launch a winter reading program. As the library approaches its 25th anniversary, discussions are also underway for further renovations.

The care cabinet represents a significant resource for the community, reinforcing the library’s mission to be a supportive space for all residents. As Krooswyk stated, “We are always trying to share ways to support the community,” making the New Lenox Public Library a beacon of hope and assistance in challenging times.
