Teamsters Ratify New Contract, Ending Strike at WCCUSD

Members of Teamsters Local 856 at the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) have overwhelmingly ratified a new contract, ending a two-day strike. With a remarkable 98 percent approval, the agreement secures significant wage increases and fully employer-paid medical care for approximately 1,400 workers.

The three-year contract encompasses various improvements, including key language adjustments that aim to enhance working conditions. Workers across a range of positions—such as administrative roles, building maintenance, custodial services, food service, and classroom support—are set to benefit from these changes effective immediately.

Major Gains for Workers

Peter Finn, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 856 and Director of the Teamsters Public Services and Health Care Division, emphasized the achievements of the union members. “Teamsters at West Contra Costa Unified School District worked hard to secure an agreement that delivers real gains and honors their labor,” he stated.

The contract not only includes 100 percent employer-paid Teamsters health care, but it also implements restrictions on outsourcing, thereby protecting jobs within the district. This development addresses a long-standing concern among union members regarding job security and workplace stability.

Utility worker and shop steward Gary Abeyta expressed pride in the union’s accomplishments. “When we organized with the Teamsters, one of our primary goals was to get fully covered medical,” he said. “This historic contract delivers that result and I couldn’t be prouder to be a Teamster.”

Background and Impact

The ratification of the contract follows a strike that began on December 6, 2025. Workers returned to their positions on December 8 after reaching a tentative agreement. The successful negotiations reflect the union’s commitment to advocating for fair compensation and benefits, which have become increasingly important in the current economic climate.

Teamsters Local 856 represents over 20,000 workers across Northern California, highlighting its significant role in the labor landscape. The newly ratified contract is expected to set a precedent for future negotiations not only within the WCCUSD but also for other districts facing similar challenges.
