Greg Biffle, a former NASCAR champion, and his family tragically lost their lives in a plane crash in North Carolina on October 26, 2023. The incident occurred at approximately 10:20 a.m. when a Cessna C550 business jet, owned by Biffle through GB Aviation Leasing, crashed while attempting to land at Statesville Regional Airport. Officials confirmed that Biffle, his wife Christina, their 14-year-old daughter Emma, and 5-year-old son Ryder were all aboard the aircraft.
Congressman Richard Hudson expressed his condolences on social media platform X, stating, “My heart is with all who loved them. They were friends who lived their lives focused on helping others.” He added that Biffle was not only a celebrated NASCAR champion but also a remarkable individual who significantly contributed to his community.
The Biffle family was known for their humanitarian efforts, particularly in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, where they conducted numerous rescue missions in western North Carolina. They delivered essential supplies, including chainsaws, EpiPens, and food, to families stranded in difficult-to-reach areas. Representative Hudson mentioned that Christina had recently reached out to inquire about assisting with relief efforts in Jamaica.
Fellow NASCAR driver Garrett Mitchell, a close friend of Biffle, also confirmed the tragic news on Facebook. He noted that the Biffles were en route to spend time with his family when the accident occurred. “We are devastated. I’m so sorry to share this,” Mitchell wrote.
Witnesses from the nearby Lakewood Golf Club described the plane as being “way too low” before it crashed, amid drizzle and cloudy skies. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Throughout his career, Biffle achieved remarkable success in NASCAR, with 19 career Cup Series wins. He is one of only three drivers to have won championships in both the Busch Series and the Craftsman Truck Series. In 2001, he was named the NASCAR Rookie of the Year, and in 2023, he was honored as one of NASCAR’s 75 greatest drivers.
The loss of the Biffle family has left a profound impact on the motorsports community and beyond. As fans and friends mourn their passing, the legacy of their generosity and service to others will be remembered.
