Harris County Unveils $244K Marsh Master for Flood Control

UPDATE: Harris County has just introduced a groundbreaking amphibious maintenance machine known as the Marsh Master, enhancing flood control capabilities across the region. Officials confirmed the machine’s deployment today, marking a significant advancement in maintaining the county’s extensive network of waterways.

The $244,000 Marsh Master was specifically designed for challenging wetland and swampy terrains and aims to improve access to areas previously unreachable by conventional machinery. “This is going to allow us to get into areas we’ve never been able to access before,” said Jason Krahn, chief infrastructure and operations officer for the Harris County Flood Control District. This innovative equipment is crucial as it will support the maintenance of 2,500 miles of bayous, creeks, and drainage channels, significantly improving stormwater management.

The Marsh Master was manufactured by a Louisiana company and is part of a larger $17 million investment plan approved through a 2024 bond by Harris County voters. Krahn emphasized the financial prudence of this investment, stating, “It is a significant investment, but with this equipment we’re going to be able to utilize in-house forces, reduce the need for specialty contracts, and it’s going to quickly pay for itself.”

This machine features a hydraulic shredder deck that can mow vegetation, further aiding in flood control efforts. The swift operational capability of the Marsh Master will allow crews to respond effectively during and after storms, ensuring rapid debris removal and system restoration. Krahn noted the importance of being “ever-ready for that next storm,” highlighting the Marsh Master’s role in the county’s emergency preparedness strategy.
