A remarkable holiday display featuring over 4,000 lights has transformed a home in Stilwell, Kansas, into a festive wonderland. Homeowner Tom Barnett has dedicated the past 12 years to perfecting this stunning light show, which has become a local highlight for residents and visitors alike.
Each year, Barnett changes the design of the display, aiming to bring joy to those who pass by. “I change it up each year to do something different just so that everybody can smile when they drive by the house,” he noted. His commitment to creating a visually captivating show has not only inspired his neighbors but also led him to assist the local Arboretum with their own lighting efforts.
Innovative Techniques Behind the Display
Barnett’s unique approach to holiday lighting comes from an unusual source. He learned his innovative method from a friend living in Mission Hills, who introduced him to the concept of using a potato gun for outdoor decorations. “I watched him shoot a potato gun … and I thought, ‘We can do that,'” Barnett explained. However, he adapted this idea to utilize a bow and arrow.
His technique involves shooting an arrow over a tree limb, attached to a fishing line. “A bow and arrow comes in really handy,” he said. “I shoot an arrow over a limb with fishing line on it. I’ve weighted the head of the arrow so it drops down … and then I tie that to a rope or a string and pull it back over.” This clever method allows him to string lights securely across branches, creating an enchanting effect.
A Passion for Spreading Joy
Preparation for the holiday display begins as early as September. Barnett spends weeks setting up ropes and lights, continuing his work into November to ensure everything is ready in time for the festive season. “This is really fun,” he shared. “I get a lot of joy out of doing this. It’s just something to do to make people smile.”
Barnett’s efforts have turned his home into a local attraction, drawing admirers who appreciate the creativity and dedication behind the display. As the holiday season approaches, this unique light show serves as a reminder of the joy and community spirit that can be cultivated through individual passion and creativity.
