Community Mourns the Loss of John Paul Kirk, 94, Beloved Leader

John Paul Kirk, Sr., a cherished husband, father, and community leader, passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on December 9, 2025. Surrounded by his loving family, including his wife of 73 years, Alice Kirk, and their children and grandchildren, Kirk’s legacy of service and dedication to his community is fondly remembered.

Born on March 14, 1931, in Ashland, Alabama, John was the youngest of ten siblings. He maintained strong ties with his family and lifelong friends throughout his life. After graduating from Clay County High School in 1949, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, now known as the Air Force. During his military service, he was stationed at Amarillo Air Force Base, where he taught aircraft electronics.

It was in Amarillo that John met Alice, and the couple married on December 27, 1952. Together, they raised three children: John Jr., Kathy, and Rebecca. The family expanded to include ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, with another grandchild expected in January 2026.

After leaving the Air Force, John pursued further education at Southern Tech in Atlanta, where he earned an associate degree. He later returned to college, achieving a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics from Embry Riddle University at the age of 76. His passion for flying began early; although he started lessons while in Texas, he did not obtain his pilot’s license until later. He proudly held a small plane pilot’s license for 50 years, earning multiple ratings throughout his flying career.

John’s professional journey included working for an oil company, followed by several years in Bogotá, Colombia, where he and Alice made lasting friendships. Upon their return to the United States, the couple settled in Torrance, California, where John established a successful financial planning business, retiring after more than 50 years in the industry.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, John was deeply involved in community service. He served as a member and president of the South Bay Sunrise Rotary Club, and was a member of Toastmasters International. He held leadership roles with organizations such as The Arc South Bay and the Torrance YMCA. His commitment to community and faith was evident as he joined the First United Methodist Church of Redondo Beach in 1961, where he played a pivotal role in establishing the church’s endowment fund.

John Kirk is survived by his wife, Alice, their children, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. His impact on those around him will be felt for generations.

A memorial service will take place at 11:00 AM on January 10, 2026, at the First United Methodist Church located at 243 S. Broadway, Redondo Beach, CA 90277. Family and friends are invited to celebrate John’s remarkable life and legacy.
