URGENT UPDATE: A tragic snowmobile accident in Washburn, Maine, has claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl and left her male companion seriously injured. This devastating incident unfolded shortly after 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2024.
According to the Maine Warden Service, the snowmobile was being driven by a 17-year-old boy with the girl as a passenger when it failed to navigate a sharp 90-degree turn on Story Street. The snowmobile was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed, leading to a catastrophic crash that saw the vehicle hit a curb, flip over, and eject both teens onto the road.
The snowmobile then struck the side of a nearby house, intensifying the impact of the collision. Tragically, the girl was pronounced dead at the scene, while the boy suffered multiple injuries. He was first transported to Cary Medical Center in Caribou and later transferred to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for further treatment. Both teenagers were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
The names of the victims have not been released, as the investigation into the incident is still ongoing. Mark Latti, a spokesperson for the Maine Warden Service, confirmed that they are withholding their identities pending further inquiries.
Emergency responders, including Presque Isle EMS, Presque Isle Fire and Rescue, and the Presque Isle Police Department, promptly arrived at the scene to assist.
