UPDATE: The Tournament of Roses is stepping up recovery efforts following devastating wildfires that struck the community just days after the annual Rose Parade. With at least 31 fatalities and countless homes lost, the tournament is using its platform to bring hope back to Pasadena, California, as it prepares for the upcoming parade on January 1, 2025.
The Eaton and Palisades wildfires decimated thousands of homes, impacting many within the tournament itself. 48 staff members and volunteers have been directly affected, forcing them to confront heartbreak just after celebrating their community’s spirit during the parade’s jubilant theme, “Best Day Ever.”
Reese Rosental Saporito, a marketing assistant for the tournament, described the emotional rollercoaster. “It was a really quick pivot from a really joyous time… to something of such mass tragedy,” she said. Saporito, who evacuated her home in Altadena, witnessed the destruction that left her community in ruins. “My house is still standing, but everyone else on my street is gone,” she added.
The tournament’s director of communications, Candy Carlson, also lost her home in the fires. “It was the most significant, tragic thing that’s happened in my life,” Carlson stated. “The staff, the volunteers were the first to come toward me with, how can I help?” Their support became a lifeline in a time of despair.
In response to the crisis, the Tournament of Roses has organized clothing donations and other recovery initiatives. Carlson noted, “Sorting clothing was a real healing time for me… I was part of helping instead of just receiving.” This year’s parade theme, “The Magic in Teamwork,” has become a tribute to the resilience shown by first responders and community members alike.
Mark Leavens, president of the Tournament of Roses, emphasized the significance of this year’s event. “We really look at this year as being especially relevant to the people that have gone through so much,” he said. He confirmed that a fund has been established to support those affected, including tournament members who lost their homes.
As the community unites to heal, the upcoming parade aims to be a symbol of hope and resilience. “It’s our joy to bring the parade to Pasadena… if we can make just one person affected by the fires get a glimmer of hope, then everything we’ve done will be worth it,” Carlson declared.
The Tournament of Roses’ efforts reflect the spirit of Altadena and the surrounding areas, showcasing their commitment to recovery and rebuilding. As Saporito put it, “What the fires really did for me personally is make me realize how deeply ingrained the spirit of Altadena is.”
With the parade just around the corner, the community is poised to celebrate not only its vibrant culture but also its unyielding strength in the face of adversity. This year’s festivities will spotlight the incredible teamwork witnessed throughout the recovery efforts, reminding everyone that together, they can overcome even the darkest times.
The Tournament of Roses invites everyone to join in this powerful celebration, making it clear that the show must go on, as they work to uplift those who have been touched by tragedy.
