Nathan Richardson Brings Frederick Douglass to Life in Hampton

URGENT UPDATE: Nathan Richardson will present a unique historical workshop on Monday, October 30, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. at the Hampton History Museum, showcasing his portrayal of the iconic abolitionist Frederick Douglass. This event is a must-see for history enthusiasts and aspiring interpreters across the region.

Richardson, a Suffolk native and experienced historical interpreter, transforms into Douglass, captivating audiences with his dedication and authenticity. He performs approximately 65 shows each year, engaging students and history buffs nationwide. “An interpreter literally has to become that person,” he states, emphasizing the depth of knowledge required to answer audience questions as Douglass would.

The workshop, titled “The Art of Historical Interpretation with Nathan Richardson,” is set to teach attendees the critical skills needed for historical interpretation. Richardson will share his experiences and insights gained over more than a decade in this profession, encouraging new generations to embrace this art form.

During his performances, Richardson not only reenacts significant speeches but also invites direct questions from his audience, enhancing the experience. He responds to inquiries with historical accuracy, recounting Douglass’s life, family, and legacy. “I had five children, three boys, two girls. My daughter, Annie, passed away when she was 10 years old,” he tells curious attendees. His interactive approach makes history accessible and relatable.

Having served 22 years in the Army, Richardson began performing as a historical interpreter in 2012. He chose Douglass for his remarkable impact on civil rights and powerful oratory. “Abolitionists like Douglass set the standard for civil rights in America,” Richardson explains, underscoring the importance of preserving and sharing such stories.

However, Richardson warns of a concerning trend: the declining number of historical interpreters. “We need new people,” he urges, advocating for younger generations to step into this vital role.

The event will take place at the Hampton History Museum, located at 120 Old Hampton Lane. Admission is free for museum members and just $5 for nonmembers. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from one of the leading figures in historical interpretation!
