UPDATE: The much-anticipated Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) has officially opened, featuring a stunning miniature of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge among other beloved NYC landmarks. This festive exhibition runs through January 11, 2024, and promises to captivate visitors with its intricate designs and unique materials.
During a recent guided tour, Kenia Pittman, the director of exhibition design operations, highlighted the significance of the miniature Brooklyn Bridge, stating, “It became part of our collection in 2004.” Designed to scale, the bridge is a centerpiece of the exhibition, showcasing a remarkable construction made from natural materials including oak, elm, and willow twigs.
The Holiday Train Show, which debuted 34 years ago, features over 30 G-scale model locomotives and nearly 200 plant-based replicas of famous structures. Visitors can marvel at the stunning cityscape that includes not just the Brooklyn Bridge but also the Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center, and various other iconic buildings crafted from leaves, seeds, and bark.
This year’s exhibition is particularly special as it introduces new additions like the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Delacorte Theater, both meticulously constructed to reflect their real-life counterparts. The intricate details capture the essence of these landmarks, making each visit a fresh experience.
Pittman noted the unique approach taken by the Applied Imagination team, who create these miniatures using natural materials sourced from nearby woods. “They use materials like leaves, seeds, twigs, and acorns,” she explained, emphasizing their commitment to sustainability and creativity.
As night falls, many of the structures illuminate, transforming the exhibition into a magical evening spectacle, captivating all ages. The Garden has also planned a variety of activities alongside the Holiday Train Show, including a sensory-friendly morning on January 3 and a special Holiday Train Show After Dark event on January 10.
Tickets for the event start at $25, available through the NYBG website. Visitors are encouraged to explore the enchanting displays and immerse themselves in a world where nature and creativity converge to celebrate New York City’s rich architectural heritage.
