Chico State Basketball Teams Secure Narrow Victories Over Cal State LA

The Chico State women’s and men’s basketball teams both achieved thrilling victories over Cal State Los Angeles on January 12, 2024, at Acker Gym in Chico. The women’s team improved its record to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play with a close 60-57 win. Meanwhile, the men’s team triumphed 70-69, highlighted by a last-minute layup.

The women’s game saw the Wildcats face an early challenge, falling behind 9-2 within the first two minutes. However, the team rallied, overtaking Cal State LA with a 13-12 lead by the end of the first quarter. Despite holding the lead for most of the game, Chico found itself trailing 53-46 as the final quarter began. In a remarkable comeback, the Wildcats outscored their opponents 14-4 in the fourth quarter to clinch the victory.

Madison Parry led the Wildcats with an impressive performance, scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Nseije Ortiz contributed 12 points, while Meadow Aragon added nine points and also pulled down 12 rebounds. The Wildcats dominated the boards, out-rebounding Cal State LA 45-30. Chico State will next compete at home against Cal State Dominguez Hills on January 13, 2024, at 1 p.m.

Chico State’s men’s team also showcased resilience in their matchup. The Wildcats entered halftime trailing 45-38 but orchestrated a strong second-half comeback. Jeremiah Dargan was instrumental in the victory, scoring 23 points, including a crucial layup with just nine seconds remaining. Chris Holley contributed 13 points along with six rebounds and five assists, while Cortevious Taylor recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
