URGENT UPDATE: Parkland High School’s boys basketball team achieved a thrilling 54-49 victory over Allentown Central Catholic this afternoon at Rockne Hall, marking a pivotal moment in their season as they eye playoff contention. The win not only halts a three-game losing streak but also boosts confidence for both teams as they navigate through January and into the playoffs.
The game, held on January 13, 2024, saw Parkland’s leading scorer, Blake Nassry, struggle initially, failing to score in the first half. However, the Trojans rallied, thanks to seniors Tyler Beck, Jude Ruisch, and Ryan Kearney, who combined for all 18 points in a crucial second quarter. Parkland overcame a 16-9 deficit to lead 27-25 at halftime.
In a decisive third quarter, Beck and Nassry ignited the Trojans’ offense. Beck scored a career-high 19 points, including a pivotal three-pointer that extended Parkland’s lead to 37-25. “I felt really good today,” Beck stated after the game, crediting his teammates for their support. “Anyone can score on our team. The team goes really deep.”
Parkland dominated the third quarter, shooting 6-for-11 from the field and 4-for-6 from three-point range, while Central Catholic struggled with just 4-for-15 shooting. “They came out and hit a couple of big shots, and it snowballed on us,” said Central Catholic coach Dennis Csensits.
Despite a late push from Central Catholic, sparked by a half-court trapping defense, Parkland held its ground. The Vikings managed to cut the lead to 46-41 but could not capitalize on consecutive turnovers by Parkland. Nassry and Kearney sealed the win with perfect free throw shooting in the final minutes.
This victory is significant for Parkland, now standing at 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. The Trojans are currently ranked No. 3 in the lehighvalleylive Top 12, reflecting their potential as they prepare for the upcoming playoff season.
