UPDATE: The Dickinson Mavericks suffered a disappointing 5-3 loss to the Jamestown Blue Jays on January 3, 2026, at the West River Ice Center. This defeat comes on the heels of a tight loss to Fargo Davies, marking a challenging weekend for the Mavericks.
Despite showing moments of promise, the Mavericks struggled defensively, particularly on the penalty kill. Head coach Lance Knudson expressed frustration, stating, “We were off as a team today. We didn’t play our best hockey coming off an emotional loss yesterday.”
Early in the game, Jamestown capitalized on a power play, scoring at the 8:59 mark of the first period. However, Gabi Sobolik answered back for the Mavericks, netting her seventh goal of the season during a late power play, thanks to a setup from junior forward KeAna Hendrickson. This goal not only showcased Sobolik’s talent but also marked a pivotal moment in the game.
A bright spot for Dickinson was senior forward Kyndall Peterson, who reached significant career milestones with her 100th point and 50th goal. “You know what you’re gonna get from her on the ice,” Knudson remarked, emphasizing Peterson’s hard work and ability to score under pressure.
However, the second period proved challenging for the Mavericks. Freshman goaltender Kahlan Lopez made key saves, but Jamestown took advantage of a lapse in defense, leading to two quick goals that set the tone for the remainder of the game.
The Mavericks’ penalty kill, typically a strength, faltered. “This year it has not been,” Knudson noted, highlighting the need for improvement in this critical area.
As the third period unfolded, Dickinson sought to rally back. Mya Hilton, an eighth grader, scored a stunning goal from the faceoff circle, cutting the deficit to two goals. Yet, despite their efforts, the Mavericks could not close the gap.
Looking ahead, the Mavericks (3-7-0, 1-7-1) face a crucial week with upcoming matchups against Minot United on January 6 and Williston at home on January 8. “We only have 13 games left here, and this was one of those games that makes it a lot easier if you do win for sure,” Knudson stated, emphasizing the urgency for his team to bounce back.
As the Mavericks regroup, the focus will be on consistency and resilience to turn their season around. Fans are eager to see how this high school hockey team responds in the coming days, with their playoff hopes hanging in the balance.
