Thousands Honor Fallen Cpl. Matthew “Ty” Snook Today in Delaware

UPDATE: Thousands are gathering today to pay their final respects to fallen Delaware State Police Corporal Matthew “Ty” Snook. The Celebration of Life services are taking place at the University of Delaware in the Bob Carpenter Center, drawing law enforcement, first responders, and community members from across the region.

The emotional ceremony follows a tragic incident on December 23, 2022, when Cpl. Snook was killed while working overtime at a DMV in Minquadale, Delaware. Authorities report that after being shot, Snook heroically pushed a DMV employee out of harm’s way, urging others to flee as the suspect fired again.

Starting at 9 a.m. today, a public viewing will be held at the Bob Carpenter Center until noon, allowing community members to pay their respects. The official Celebration of Life ceremony will commence at 1 p.m. and last until 3 p.m.. The event will include a 21-gun salute and a flyover, honoring the sacrifice made by the 10-year veteran who leaves behind a wife and a one-year-old daughter.

To accommodate the anticipated turnout, which is expected to bring more than 3,000 additional cars into the area, all 13,000 students in the Christina School District will engage in virtual learning today. The procession began early this morning, with southbound lanes on I-95 temporarily closed at 6:30 a.m. between the mall and the university at Rt. 896.
