He played under the guidance of legendary quarterback Troy Aikman and contributed to the team’s success, winning three Super Bowls in a span of four years. After his tenure with the Cowboys ended in 1999, Garrett played for the New York Giants and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, finishing his career with the Miami Dolphins.
Following his retirement, Garrett transitioned into coaching, beginning as the quarterbacks coach for the Dolphins under Nick Saban. He later joined the Cowboys as the offensive coordinator in 2007, earning a promotion to assistant head coach the following year. In 2011, he became the head coach of the Cowboys, a position he held until 2019. During his ten seasons at the helm, Garrett compiled an 85-67 record, achieving a winning percentage of .559. He led the Cowboys to the playoffs three times, in 2014, 2016, and 2018, but was unable to advance past the divisional round. His tenure ended after a disappointing 8-8 season.
In 2020, Garrett was appointed as the offensive coordinator for the Giants under head coach Joe Judge, but he was let go midway through the following season. Despite not being a mainstream candidate for the Titans’ head coach position, Garrett’s experience and connections within the league may provide valuable insights as the Titans rebuild their coaching staff.
