The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed former New York Yankees right-handed reliever Indigo Diaz to a minor league contract. This move aims to bolster the team’s relief options within their minor league system. Diaz, who is 27 years old, has spent the last three seasons in the Yankees’ organization, notably pitching for the Somerset Patriots in 2025.
Diaz’s journey in professional baseball began when he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 27th round of the 2019 MLB Draft. He progressed through the Braves’ system, reaching Double-A by 2021. However, his path has been somewhat uneven, marked by a series of challenges and changes in organization.
In early 2023, the Yankees acquired Diaz from the Braves in a trade that also brought Caleb Durbin to New York. While Diaz initially struggled to find his footing at the High-A level, he later advanced to Double-A, where he showcased his skills effectively. In the 2025 season, Diaz made 42 appearances for the Somerset Patriots, posting an impressive 2.38 ERA and a 3.35 FIP. Over 52.1 innings, he allowed just 15 earned runs while striking out 46 batters, achieving a 1.11 WHIP. His performance included securing six saves and finishing the season with an 8-3 record.
Diaz’s repertoire includes a four-seam fastball that can reach the mid-90s, complemented by a strong slider. Despite a significant dip in strikeout numbers during the 2025 season, he has historically maintained high strikeout rates, accumulating 269 strikeouts in 204 total innings across all levels of play. Although he has yet to advance beyond Double-A in his career, his experience will add valuable depth to the Diamondbacks’ minor league roster.
Currently, Diaz has been assigned to the Double-A Amarillo Sod Poodles. This team plays in a challenging environment known for its offense-friendly conditions, which can pose difficulties for new players. Despite the Diamondbacks’ need for enhancements in their major league bullpen, they have primarily focused on smaller additions like Diaz, rather than significant signings.
As the Diamondbacks prepare for the upcoming season, the addition of Diaz reflects their strategy of building depth in the minor leagues while assessing options for the major league roster. The team’s management has yet to make any substantial moves to strengthen their bullpen, indicating a cautious approach to roster changes as they look ahead.
