Bridgeport Police Arrest Man for Vandalizing Holocaust Survivor’s Menorah

UPDATE: Bridgeport Police have arrested Austin Smalls, a 29-year-old man, for allegedly vandalizing a menorah built by a Holocaust survivor outside the Congregation B’nai Israel in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Smalls turned himself in on Tuesday, following a police warrant issued in connection with the shocking incident that occurred on December 24, 2023.

The vandalism took place around 3 a.m., when surveillance footage captured Smalls arriving in his vehicle, rocking the menorah back and forth until it toppled and shattered. This act of destruction has deeply affected the community, as Rabbi Evan Schultz revealed that the menorah was crafted by the grandfather of children who grew up in the congregation. “He built this menorah as a gift to the synagogue, crafted by his own two hands,” Schultz stated. The menorah was discovered lying in pieces, caught in bushes, symbolizing a profound loss for the community.

Shortly after the vandalism, Smalls was arrested by Bridgeport officers for an unrelated incident several miles away, still wearing the same clothing seen in the surveillance footage. At the time of his arrest, the vandalism had not yet been reported to the police. Smalls now faces charges of third-degree criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

The judge who signed the warrant for his arrest has mandated that he must stay away from the synagogue. Currently, Smalls is free on a promise to appear and is scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on February 10, 2024.

This incident has sparked outrage among community members and highlights the emotional impact of such acts on local faith groups. Rabbi Schultz’s poignant message underscores the communal grief and violation felt by those connected to the menorah’s legacy.

As authorities continue their investigation, they urge anyone with additional information to come forward. The community remains vigilant, hoping for justice and restoration after this troubling event. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
