A dog named Arvo from Alberta, Canada, has gained significant online popularity due to his charming and distinctive underbite. Initially described as having a “slight” facial difference, this feature has evolved into a pronounced, endearing grin that has captured the hearts of many. As Arvo approaches his third birthday in March 2024, his story has resonated widely on social media.
Arvo, an Australian shepherd mix, was rescued as a puppy after being discovered under a porch. His owner, Erika, shared the poignant story behind his adoption, noting that four of his siblings did not survive. “We just felt so terrible for him and wanted to give him a home,” she told Newsweek. When Arvo was first brought into the family, Erika was informed that he had a minor underbite.
“The lady we got him from told us after his first checkup that he had a slight underbite,” Erika explained. Their veterinarian confirmed this assessment, assuring the family that it was barely noticeable at the time. However, as Arvo matured, his underbite became more pronounced. “Around four months, his bottom lip started really peeking out, and we could no longer deny that it maybe wasn’t so slight after all,” she said.
Interestingly, Arvo’s biological father also had a similar underbite, a feature that attracted Erika from the beginning. “I remember saying, ‘Oh, I hope you look just like your dad.’ And here we are,” she reflected.
Despite the dramatic appearance of his underbite, it has not hindered Arvo in any way. In fact, it has become his defining characteristic. The dog has amassed thousands of followers on TikTok, where his owners regularly share videos of his daily antics, all highlighted by his unique smile. One popular video on his account has garnered over 1.8 million views.
Erika noted that people often stop them on the street to comment on Arvo’s unusual looks. “We’ve had a few people stop us on the street to comment on his smile and tell us we should start a page for him,” she said. Comments from fans on TikTok reflect his growing popularity, with one user stating: “Never seen this page or dog but you got a new follower now just because of those teefs.” Another commenter humorously remarked: “The vet’s right…I don’t notice anything.”
The outpouring of affection for Arvo has surprised Erika. “I have been blown away by the love for our guy,” she stated. “People have been so kind, and it is so much fun seeing all the other dogs with goofy toofs out there.”
