Alexander Skarsgård has clarified recent speculation regarding his sexual orientation. During the Zurich Film Festival in October 2025, the 49-year-old actor discussed his role in the film “Pillion,” where he portrays a biker involved in a BDSM relationship with a young man. His comments about having been with both men and women in the past led to questions about whether he was coming out as bisexual.
In an interview with Variety released on Monday, Skarsgård explained that he was not intending to make a statement about his sexuality. “That it resonated with my past? It was definitely not an intended statement,” he said. He expressed uncertainty about his original remarks, adding, “I don’t know what I was talking about.”
Skarsgård suggested that the focus of his comments was meant to redirect attention toward the film’s narrative and its characters rather than his personal life. “Maybe it was trying to shift the focus more to the story and these characters. And the importance of telling the story like this,” he stated.
The actor further emphasized that his background was not relevant to his character in “Pillion.” He stated, “I mean, I do have a kid, but what I’ve done in the past, who I’ve been with, men, women.” His aim was to portray a subculture with authenticity that he felt had not been accurately represented before.
Skarsgård welcomed a son in 2022 with Swedish actress Tuva Novotny. Despite his rising fame, he has maintained a private life and has never been married. In the Variety interview, he reflected on how fatherhood has reshaped his priorities.
“I lived on the road. I love that aspect of the industry — you’re a traveling circus,” he noted, reminiscing about his pre-parenthood lifestyle. “But now, I need to balance that with family life and making sure I can be present for my kid. I can’t be as selfish and narcissistic as I was before.”
Skarsgård previously shared his thoughts on fatherhood in an interview with Esquire. He expressed gratitude for becoming a parent later in life, stating, “I’m glad that I didn’t have that responsibility when I started out and could just be selfish and throw myself into anything without taking other people’s needs and desires into consideration.”
He acknowledged the significant changes that come with parenthood, remarking, “That obviously changes when you have a kid and you have responsibility.” Skarsgård concluded by highlighting his current ability to be selective about the projects he undertakes, ensuring they align with his family commitments.
As the conversation about sexuality and representation continues to evolve, Skarsgård’s comments serve as a reminder of the complexities surrounding personal identity and public perception, especially in the entertainment industry.
