AMC Networks CFO Patrick O’Connell to Leave for New Opportunity

Patrick O’Connell, Chief Financial Officer of AMC Networks, is set to step down to pursue an opportunity outside the media industry. The announcement was made on Thursday, although the company has not disclosed specific details regarding O’Connell’s next role. He will participate in the upcoming fourth-quarter earnings release and conference call with Wall Street analysts before his departure.

O’Connell will remain with AMC Networks until the end of March 2024. The exact date for the earnings release and call has yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to occur within the next few weeks. A search for his successor is already underway.

Leadership Transition and Corporate Context

O’Connell joined AMC Networks as CFO in mid-2022 after Christina Spade, his predecessor, was elevated to the role of CEO. Spade’s tenure was short-lived, as she departed just three months later amid a wave of layoffs and cost-cutting measures. O’Connell’s background includes a role as managing director at Goldman Sachs and as Executive Vice President and head of corporate development at CBS Corp.

The current leadership of AMC Networks is under Kristin Dolan, who assumed the role of CEO in early 2023. Recently, Dolan had her contract extended through 2028. In a statement, she expressed gratitude for O’Connell’s contributions, stating, “On behalf of the Board and the entire company, I want to thank Patrick for his leadership, partnership, and meaningful contributions to AMC Networks.” Dolan acknowledged O’Connell as a trusted colleague who played a significant role in supporting the company’s strategic priorities.

AMC Networks, like many of its counterparts in the media industry, is grappling with the challenges posed by the decline of traditional pay-TV. Recent reports indicate that while streaming has started to surpass linear television as a revenue source, advertising and distribution revenues have declined by double digits as consumer habits shift. The company is navigating these changes as it adapts to a rapidly evolving media landscape.

“It has been a privilege to work with such a talented organization. I am proud of what we accomplished together and am confident in the future of AMC Networks,” O’Connell stated.

As AMC Networks prepares for this transition, the focus will be on maintaining stability and continuing to drive forward its strategic initiatives in a challenging market. The company’s ability to adapt to industry changes will be crucial in determining its future success.
