Bemidji High School’s Tanner Johnson Receives Triple ‘A’ Award

Tanner Johnson, a standout athlete from Bemidji High School, has made history by becoming the first Lumberjack to receive the prestigious Triple ‘A’ Award. This accolade, presented by the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL), recognizes high school seniors who excel in academics, arts, and athletics. Johnson will represent Region 8AA, alongside one other athlete, during the upcoming awards ceremony.

The Triple ‘A’ Award, an acronym for Academics, Arts, and Athletics, honors students who maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 while actively participating in MSHSL-sponsored athletic and fine arts programs. Johnson, a dedicated three-sport athlete, competes in cross country, swimming and diving, and track and field.

Selection Process and Regional Context

The selection for the Triple ‘A’ Award involves a thorough multi-level process. Each school affiliated with the MSHSL nominates one male and one female athlete. For Bemidji High School, Megan Johnson (no relation to Tanner) has been nominated as the female representative. The finalists will be recognized at a banquet in March 2024, where the four statewide winners will be announced.

Region 8AA comprises several schools, including Alexandria, Becker, Brainerd, Buffalo, Detroit Lakes, Little Falls, Monticello, Rocori, St. Cloud Apollo, St. Cloud Tech, Sartell, Sauk Rapids-Rice, and Willmar. Each of these institutions contributes to the competitive landscape from which the awardees are selected.

A Celebration of Achievement

During the regional recognition banquet, all 32 finalists will partake in an on-court ceremony at the Class AAA championship game of the boys basketball state tournament. The statewide winners—one male and one female from both Class A and Class AA schools—will receive a $1,000 scholarship for four years. This financial support aims to encourage and reward the balance of academic and athletic excellence.

For Tanner Johnson, this recognition not only highlights his achievements but also sets a precedent for future students at Bemidji High School. His commitment to both his studies and sports showcases the spirit of the Triple ‘A’ Award, inspiring others to strive for excellence in multiple areas.
