The Nora Larabee Memorial Library in Stafford is hosting a watercolor workshop on January 30, 2024, led by local artist Nancy Hildebrand. This event caters to both beginners and experienced watercolor enthusiasts. Hildebrand emphasizes that no prior experience is necessary, inviting participants to “enjoy, relax, create, and share good company” in a welcoming environment.
All necessary supplies will be provided, and each participant will leave with a finished, framed artwork. The cost for the workshop is $15, covering the materials. As space is limited to 10 participants, interested individuals are encouraged to register by calling 620-234-5762.
Library Updates and Community Engagement
The library also recently received a generous collection of books from Joe Fritzemeyer and his late wife, Jean Fritzemeyer. This collection features a variety of fiction, religious, and political works, inspiring the library to dedicate a section to Western literature, which remains popular among readers. Furthermore, Josh Hildebrand, Nancy’s grandson, has donated over 100 “Easy Chapter” books, including beloved series such as Magic Tree House and Boxcar Children. These books are ideal for bedtime stories and serve as an introduction to chapter reading for children.
Sandy and Nancy have been actively sorting and cataloging the new acquisitions while also managing the rotation of books from the South Central Kansas Library System (SCKLS). Recently, the library received six new computer chairs and a cabinet through a grant aimed at enhancing programming. Assembly of these items is expected to keep staff busy in the coming week.
Upcoming Events and Programs
In addition to the watercolor workshop, the library plans to host a program featuring Jennifer Gleason, focusing on the implications of artificial intelligence and tools like ChatGPT. This session aims to equip attendees with the skills to recognize AI applications and utilize them effectively in daily life. A date for this event will be announced soon.
The library is also resuming its popular “Recently Read” discussions on January 23, 2024. This gathering will allow participants to share insights on a range of books, from topics related to Israel to figures like Fred Harvey and Marilyn Monroe. The community is encouraged to take part in the lively exchange of ideas and recommendations.
Other regular events include Preschool Story Hour on Monday mornings from 10:00 to 11:00, Dungeons & Dragons every Wednesday from 16:00 to 18:00, and an ESOL class led by Rachel Sandoval every Wednesday except the second Wednesday of the month at 18:00. The “Winter Reads to Contentment Leads” book challenge has also commenced, encouraging more reading during the colder months.
