UPDATE: A man is safe after a dramatic rescue from freezing waters at Spicer’s Marina in Noank, Connecticut, on Wednesday evening. Police officers braved sub-zero temperatures to save him after receiving a 911 call at 7:21 PM.
The call reported that the man had fallen into icy waters and was struggling to stay afloat. His friend, who had initially dropped him off at the marina, alerted authorities when he failed to send a text message after boarding his boat. Upon returning to the marina, he found the man submerged and quickly secured him to the dock to prevent him from going under.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after and found the victim in distress, having already been in the water for approximately 15 minutes. The Groton Police Department reported that the man was losing feeling in his limbs and was unable to move due to the freezing conditions.
Officers on the scene acted swiftly, holding the man’s wrist to keep him afloat while additional units were dispatched. They cleared large chunks of ice to facilitate the rescue operation. “After a coordinated effort, officers and the friend were able to pull him onto the dock before he was transferred to a rescue stretcher,” police stated.
The man was subsequently transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Fortunately, he is expected to recover, thanks to the quick actions of his friend and the responding officers.
Authorities also revealed that the friend had made an initial attempt to save him before calling 911. The collaboration between the Groton Police, Noank Fire Department, Groton Long Point Police Department, and emergency medical personnel was crucial in ensuring a successful rescue.
As temperatures continue to plunge, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by icy conditions. Residents are urged to stay safe and vigilant during this winter season.
