BREAKING: A cooking-related fire has caused substantial damage to a home in Aurora, displacing a family of four on Wednesday night. The incident occurred around 6:30 PM on the 400 block of South Lima Circle, prompting a rapid response from local fire and medical units.
Firefighters arrived on the scene to find flames and smoke emanating from the upper level of the residence. Occupants were safely evacuated and waited in the front yard as crews assessed the situation. Fire officials identified the source as a kitchen fire that had spread into the attic, confirming that no residents were inside during the blaze.
The fire was brought under control by 6:57 PM, approximately 17 minutes after the initial call to 911. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries; however, the fire inflicted “significant damage” to both the kitchen and attic, according to Aurora Fire and Rescue spokesperson Eric Hurst.
Two adults and two children were displaced due to the fire but opted not to seek assistance from the American Red Cross. The incident required a robust response, involving 15 fire and medical units and nearly 40 personnel from Aurora Fire Rescue and local police.
Investigators have classified the fire as “accidental” and directly related to cooking activities. Hurst reiterated the dangers of unattended cooking, highlighting that it is the leading cause of home fires. He urged residents to avoid leaving cooking unattended, to keep flammable items away from heat sources, and to ensure that working smoke alarms are installed on every level of their homes and in sleeping areas.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and take precautions to prevent such incidents, as the community comes together to support those affected by this unfortunate event. As investigations continue, local authorities will monitor the area for safety compliance.
