The Legionaries of Christ has elected Father Carlos Alberto Gutiérrez as its new director general for the term spanning 2026 to 2032. The decision was made during the congregation’s general chapter, which has been convened in Rome since January 20. Father Gutiérrez succeeds Father John Connor, an American priest who held the position previously.
Born in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, in 1972, Father Gutiérrez joined the Legionaries of Christ in 1999 and was ordained a priest a decade later. His extensive pastoral experience includes work in several countries, such as Chile, Italy, Colombia, Venezuela, and Mexico. Most recently, he served as the territorial director for the northern region of Mexico.
Father Gutiérrez’s academic background is notable; he holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and theology from the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum and a bachelor’s degree in industrial and systems engineering from the Monterrey Institute of Technology. He also earned a master’s degree in psychology from Divine Mercy University in Virginia.
Commitment to Renewal and Service
In a statement regarding his election, the Legionaries of Christ emphasized Father Gutiérrez’s mission to “continue the path of renewal” established by the congregation. The statement highlights the dedication to promoting evangelization and outreach to those on the “existential peripheries.” The new leadership aims to foster a culture of transparency, care, and service within the Church.
The general chapter consists of 60 priests representing 13 countries. Ongoing discussions during the assembly will focus on electing general councilors and a general administrator, as well as evaluating various aspects of the Legionaries’ life and mission.
Context of the Legionaries of Christ
Founded in 1941, the Legionaries of Christ is a religious congregation of pontifical right. It currently comprises two bishops, 1,033 priests, and 273 religious and novices worldwide. The congregation is part of the Regnum Christi spiritual family, which is undergoing significant renewal and reform following past scandals, including those involving its founder, Marcial Maciel.
In February 2025, the new statutes of the Regnum Christi Federation were approved, defining it as a “spiritual family and apostolic body” encompassing four vocations—Legionaries of Christ, consecrated laymen, consecrated women, and lay members. Together, they share a common charism, spirituality, and mission.
At the same time as the Legionaries of Christ’s general chapter, the general assembly of the consecrated women of Regnum Christi is also taking place in Rome. During this assembly, Nancy Nohrden has been reelected as director general. Additionally, the general assembly of consecrated laymen is underway, with a new leader to be elected soon.
On January 28, Pope Leo XIV met with participants of these assemblies, encouraging them to clarify their identities. He expressed belief that a clearer understanding of their vocation would enhance their ability to effectively proclaim the Gospel.
