In a commanding display of strength and skill, the Romeo High School wrestling team captured their sixth consecutive Division 1 district title on February 11, 2026. Competing at Rochester Stoney Creek, the Bulldogs showcased their prowess by defeating Utica 67-9 in the semifinals, followed by a decisive 65-17 victory against Utica Eisenhower in the finals.
Thomas Jaynes, a senior member of the team, reflected on the trajectory of the program during his tenure. He noted the highs and lows experienced over the past few years, from reaching the Division 1 Final Four in his freshman year to enduring earlier exits in subsequent seasons. This year, driven by a talented roster, Jaynes expressed optimism about returning to the state tournament.
“We have a really good team again and I think we have what it takes to get back to the state tournament,” he stated.
The Bulldogs, currently ranked 14th in Division 1, displayed their strength against Eisenhower, securing 11 wins, with ten victories coming by way of pinfall. The team outscored their opponents 132-26 over the two dual meets, highlighting their dominance throughout the evening.
Strong Performance Leads to Victory
Romeo’s early strategy paid off as they quickly established an 18-0 lead. Three consecutive pins from Colton Skurda (144 pounds), Anthony Yuquilima (150 pounds), and Owen Perry (157 pounds) set the tone for the match. Although Eisenhower managed to close the gap to 18-17 with wins from Anthony Cleland (165 pounds), Jared Haddad (175 pounds), and Ian Gregorich (190 pounds), the Bulldogs quickly regained control.
Coach James Cali praised his team’s performance, acknowledging the competitive nature of the match. “The score was close, and Eisenhower has some really good wrestlers. But I thought we responded well after being up by a point with a lot of pins,” he said.
After the close start, Romeo surged ahead, securing victories in the remaining weight classes. Jaynes (215 pounds), Rashaad Hardman (285 pounds), Aaron Moskwa (106 pounds), Nathan Pugh (113 pounds), Nico Adamo (120 pounds), Eric Miller (126 pounds), Noah Bonett (132 pounds), and Valentino Adamo (138 pounds) all contributed to the Bulldogs’ impressive scoring tally.
Looking Ahead to Regionals
The victory marks a significant achievement for Romeo, improving their season record to 28-10. With the district title secured, the Bulldogs will advance to the regional semifinals next Wednesday, with the location and time yet to be determined.
Meanwhile, for Utica Eisenhower, the loss spells an end to their team season. Coach Aidan Pierobon acknowledged the challenges his young squad faced, especially with injuries affecting key players. “We didn’t match up well with the other teams in this district. We were short-handed and I think our youth showed,” he noted.
As teams like Eisenhower and Stoney Creek prepare for the upcoming MHSAA Individual State Tournament, the focus now shifts for many towards individual performance and potential qualification. With a season filled with challenges and triumphs, the Romeo wrestling program continues to build on its legacy of success.
