Community Mourns the Loss of Douglas Edward Erickson at 85

Douglas Edward Erickson, a cherished member of the Esparto community, passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on January 26, 2026, surrounded by his family. His life spanned significant milestones, from his birth on March 31, 1940, in Albany, California, to his enduring legacy in Esparto, where he spent most of his life.

Erickson graduated from Esparto High School in 1958, where he formed a lasting bond with his high school sweetheart, Lucille Richardson. The couple married in 1960, embarking on a journey that would see them become integral figures in their community. Together, they contributed significantly to local initiatives, including the construction of the first little league field at Esparto Elementary School.

For 31 years, Douglas worked for Cal Trans, where he not only developed a reputation for his dedication but also forged many lifelong friendships. His passion for tinkering was well-known; he could often be found modifying everything from his Ford 9N to various vehicles, showcasing his hands-on approach to life.

Douglas and Lucille were devoted supporters of Esparto High School athletics, actively engaging with the Esparto Athletic Boosters to raise funds for sports programs. Their presence was a constant at their sons’ sporting events, where they cheered enthusiastically from the sidelines.

In his later years, Douglas enjoyed the simple pleasures of life—walking his dog, Tig, working in his yard, and tending to his almond orchard. He was predeceased by his wife Lucille and his parents, Henning and Ethel Erickson. He is survived by his sister, Linnea Herger, his sons, Erik (Mary) and Philip (Karah), and a loving family that includes grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will take place at Capay Cemetery, located at 24727 County Road 22 in Esparto, on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 13:00. Following the service, family and friends will gather for a celebration of Douglas’s life at the Esparto Boy Scout Cabin.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Douglas’s memory to the Esparto Fire Department, PO Box 366, Esparto, CA 95627. This gesture reflects Douglas’s commitment to his community and his lasting impact on those around him.
