Simpson has announced that its memory care programs at Jenner’s Pond and Simpson Meadows are the first in Pennsylvania to achieve the esteemed Comfort Matters® accreditation. This recognition places them among just 43 accredited facilities worldwide, highlighting their dedication to providing person-directed dementia care that emphasizes comfort, dignity, and emotional well-being.
Established in 1998 at the Beatitudes Campus Senior Living Community in Phoenix, Arizona, the Comfort Matters framework aims to enhance the quality of life for those living with dementia through a focus on comfort. The philosophy behind Comfort Matters encourages caregivers to view each resident as a whole person, understanding their individual needs and preferences.
To secure this accreditation, both Jenner’s Pond and Simpson Meadows underwent a demanding two-year education and evaluation process. They demonstrated excellence in five core competencies: prioritizing comfort, anticipating individual needs, knowing each resident personally, and empowering both residents and staff, ultimately ensuring the well-being of those living with dementia.
Dr. Carol McKinley, president and CEO of Simpson, expressed pride in this significant achievement. “This achievement reflects our dedication to providing individualized, compassionate, person-directed care for each of our residents and their families. Accreditation at this level is no small accomplishment, and we are proud of our team members who honor our residents’ personal routines, preferences, and life experiences when caring for them,” she stated.
The Comfort Matters training program is comprehensive, extending to all staff disciplines, including housekeeping, medical professionals, and administrators. Tena Alonzo, Director of Education and Research at Comfort Matters, noted that the program is evidence-based, with research indicating that individuals with dementia continue to perceive comfort and discomfort and communicate through their actions.
“Simpson communities as a whole are elite in their field, as they are guided by the principle of making a difference in the lives of the residents they serve. They inspire me to want to do my job better, and the example they set goes far beyond what is expected of them,” Alonzo added.
The accreditation evaluators highlighted the peaceful environment at both communities, noting features such as an abundance of natural light and the engaging interactions between staff and residents. One family member of a Jenner’s Pond resident remarked during the evaluation, “My mother is comfortable, and I will forever be grateful for choosing Jenner’s Pond. The staff and leadership care deeply about my mom, and they care about me, too.”
