The board of directors for Volunteer Hampton Roads has appointed Tage Counts as the nonprofit organization’s new president and CEO, effective March 2, 2024. Counts, a dedicated community volunteer, is recognized for his expertise in fostering partnerships, enhancing organizational effectiveness, and encouraging civic engagement.
Counts was chosen after a rigorous selection process aimed at finding a successor for Mimi Mitchell. Bryan K. Stephens, president and CEO of the Hampton Roads Chamber—an affiliate of VHR—praised Counts for his “exceptional leadership qualities” and his enthusiasm for the organization’s mission. “The Board is confident that his experience and collaborative approach will further elevate the organization’s role as a catalyst for volunteerism and service throughout our region,” Stephens stated.
Leadership Experience and Vision
In his new position, Counts will oversee the strategic direction, operations, and partnerships of Volunteer Hampton Roads, with a focus on connecting individuals, nonprofits, and businesses to impactful volunteer opportunities. His previous role as vice president of strategic engagement for the Civic Leadership Institute since 2023, along with his earlier experience as vice president of membership for the Hampton Roads Chamber, equips him with a robust background in community engagement.
“His passion for community impact and his ability to connect people and purpose make him a natural fit to lead Volunteer Hampton Roads,” commented Mary Kate Andris, president and CEO of Civic Leadership Institute. She expressed that while his departure will be felt deeply, there is excitement about continued collaboration between Counts, Volunteer Hampton Roads, and the nonprofit community.
Counts’ appointment marks a significant step for Volunteer Hampton Roads as it aims to expand its outreach and strengthen its role in the region. His experience in cultivating community relationships through various regional organizations positions him well to lead VHR in a time of increasing demand for volunteer services.
As he steps into this leadership role, Counts is expected to bring innovative ideas and a fresh perspective to enhance the organization’s efforts in promoting volunteerism, thereby contributing to the overall betterment of the Hampton Roads community.
