Winter Haven High School’s girls basketball team achieved a remarkable comeback on March 15, 2024, in the FHSAA Class 7A regional semifinals. Despite being down 30-19 at halftime against Riverview Sarasota, the Lady Blue Devils rallied to secure a 68-59 victory. The turning point came when injured star player Serenity Hardy, who has been sidelined with a torn Achilles, delivered an emotional speech to her teammates during halftime.
Arriving on crutches, Hardy’s presence reignited the team’s determination. Her passionate words resonated deeply, moving players to tears and sparking a fierce resolve within the locker room. Johnnie Lawson, head coach of Winter Haven, expressed his pride in the team’s ability to overcome adversity, stating, “(They battled) adversity and they just continued to fight. That’s Lady Blue Devils basketball.”
In the second half, the Lady Blue Devils executed a stunning turnaround, outscoring their opponents 49-29. Junior guard Alyse Mercredi led the charge with an impressive performance, scoring 30 points, along with seven rebounds and four assists. Another key player, junior big Victoria Hall, contributed 13 points, eight rebounds, and five blocks.
The game initially presented challenges for Winter Haven, particularly with the absence of both Hardy and senior guard Quin Sanders, who was suspended for conduct detrimental to the team. The first half saw Sarasota’s senior guard Gabriela Morales performing well, scoring 10 points, while their leading scorer, Taylor Davison, added three three-pointers.
As the second half unfolded, Winter Haven’s defensive strategy tightened significantly. Under Lawson’s guidance, the Lady Blue Devils employed a zone press that disrupted Sarasota’s offense, limiting Morales to just seven points in the second half and none in the final quarter.
Mercredi emphasized the importance of unity in overcoming their challenges. “I feel very relieved. It was a crazy game. I’m very glad that we were able to stick together instead of breaking apart,” she said. The offensive adjustments made by Winter Haven also paid off as they executed fake passes and improved cuts. This led to a pivotal moment when Hall’s basket put them ahead for the first time in the game, igniting a wave of support from the crowd.
With the score tied at 55-54, Hall’s layup and subsequent free throw gave Winter Haven the lead with just 3:45 remaining. The momentum continued to build, with Winter Haven utilizing their signature high-low offensive plays. Mercredi excelled in the final quarter, scoring 10 points and demonstrating her offensive skills honed over years of training.
Lawson reflected on Sanders’ situation, noting, “We suspended her for this game. But we thought it had to be done. She made a mistake. She knows the mistake.” He added that there is a plan for her return, reinforcing the team’s commitment to growth and accountability.
With this victory, Winter Haven, now 18-6, will face Sumner (20-7) in the regional finals next Friday at home. Earlier in the season, Winter Haven had decisively defeated Sumner 75-39 when Hardy was healthy.
As the Lady Blue Devils prepare for this crucial matchup, they carry the spirit of resilience demonstrated in their comeback against Riverview Sarasota, embodying the essence of team camaraderie and determination.
