Byron T. Gorres, a respected scientist and leader, passed away at the age of 89 on February 21, 2026, in Stillwater, Minnesota. Known for his impactful 34-year career at 3M, Gorres contributed significantly to the fields of science and technology, leaving behind a legacy of innovation.
He is survived by his wife, Georgene Gorres, and their four children: Sheryl Zaworski (Mike), Geoff Gorres, Gwen Gierke (Charlie), and Brett Gorres (Angie). Gorres also leaves behind nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Barbara, and brother Earl.
Memorial Services Scheduled
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on February 27, 2026, at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, located at 14107 Hudson Rd S., Afton, MN. The community is invited to pay their respects during a visitation on February 26, from 17:00 to 19:00 at Simonet Funeral Home, 6429 Osgood Ave N., Stillwater. Additional visitation will be available at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Afton.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church to honor Gorres’s memory and dedication to his faith and community.
