March marks National Food Share Month, and the Austin Salvation Army is actively participating this year alongside the Greater Minneapolis Community Connections (GMCC). This initiative aims to collect food and monetary donations for the Austin Food Shelf, engaging various local entities, including community organizations, businesses, faith groups, and individuals.
Throughout the campaign, which runs from March 1 to April 6, the Austin food shelf will coordinate with local partners to maximize contributions. The more food and funds raised, the greater the financial support from GMCC. Their matching program uses a formula that considers the total local donations and the amount of food distributed over the past year. This means that contributions can have an amplified impact on serving residents in need.
The demand for food assistance has surged, with the Austin Food Shelf currently supporting an average of 1,000 households per month. This reflects a significant increase of 37.5% over the past two years, driven largely by rising food and shelter costs. Donations of specific items, such as canned and dry beans, canned vegetables and fruits, cereal, rice, pasta, and canned meat, are especially needed.
Community members can drop off donations at the Austin Salvation Army, located at 409 1st Ave NE, Austin, MN 55912. Checks can also be mailed to this address, made out to the Salvation Army Food Shelf. In addition, several local businesses and institutions are serving as collection points, including:
– Mayo Clinic
– Austin Utilities
– Accentra Credit Union
– Mower County Employees Credit Union
– Crane Chapel
– Our Saviors Lutheran Church
– First Congregational Church
– Grace Lutheran Church
– St John Lutheran Church
– CRC
– Morning Lions
– Bremer Bank
– Hormel Corporate/Plant/R&D
This year’s campaign is particularly crucial as the need for local food assistance continues to grow. According to Stacy Wise from the Austin Salvation Army, those interested in participating or seeking additional information can contact her directly at 1-612-370-7962.
As National Food Share Month progresses, the community’s involvement will play a vital role in keeping the food shelf stocked and ensuring support for those facing food insecurity.
