Plymouth Whitemarsh Dominates Second Half to Win District 1-6A Title

In a captivating District 1-6A championship game, the Plymouth Whitemarsh Colonials mounted a remarkable defensive turnaround to clinch the title against Coatesville on March 1, 2026. The Colonials, playing at St. Joseph’s University, initially struggled, allowing 42 points in the first half. However, they dramatically tightened their defense, limiting Coatesville to just 10 points in the second half and securing a 56-52 victory.

The first half showcased the offensive prowess of Coatesville’s sophomore star, Colton Hiller, who scored 21 points, including three long-range three-pointers. Seniors Larry Brown and Chris Allegra contributed seven points each, putting the Colonials at a disadvantage as they faced a 42-point barrage before halftime.

Plymouth Whitemarsh’s head coach, Jim Donofrio, highlighted the importance of concentration as the key to their second-half performance. “It was more concentration lockdown than many adjustments,” he reflected. “If you don’t play us much, it’s a 90-foot game all the time.”

As the game progressed, the Colonials shifted their strategy, utilizing a wave of defenders to apply constant pressure on Hiller and Coatesville’s offense. Senior Buddy Denard became Hiller’s primary defender in the second half, stepping up when teammate Jack Hayes was sidelined with foul trouble. Denard’s commitment to defensive intensity was evident as he aimed to restrict Hiller’s scoring opportunities.

“Defense is a want. It’s a mindset,” Denard explained. “I was like, ‘If me and my team don’t stop him, we lose the game.’” His determination contributed to a critical stretch where Plymouth Whitemarsh held Coatesville scoreless for an astounding 8:43 of game time. This defensive effort allowed the Colonials to slowly chip away at the lead and eventually take control of the game.

As the final quarter unfolded, Plymouth Whitemarsh tied the game at 47 before taking the lead for good. Brown managed to score six points for Coatesville, including a three-pointer in the closing seconds that narrowed the margin to four points. Ultimately, Plymouth Whitemarsh’s ability to execute defensively and offensively in the second half proved decisive.

The Colonials’ defense in the final minutes included key plays from players like senior Micah Thompson, who blocked a crucial shot, and Michael Pereira, who scored pivotal baskets. The team’s focus on teamwork and defensive discipline was instrumental in their success, as evidenced by their ability to limit Coatesville’s scoring opportunities.

With this victory, Plymouth Whitemarsh advances to the first round of the PIAA-6A state playoffs, where they will host Cedar Cliff on Saturday at 13:00. The Colonials’ remarkable resilience and tactical adjustments highlight their readiness for the challenges ahead as they seek to continue their winning streak.

Reflecting on the game, Coach Donofrio expressed pride in his team’s performance, particularly in how they transformed their defensive strategy. “They had 42 points at halftime. They scored five points the entire second half. Obviously, we’re doing something right,” he stated. The Colonials are eager to build on this momentum as they head into the state playoffs.
