Daniel Radcliffe Reflects on His Harry Potter Audition Experience

Daniel Radcliffe recently expressed his discomfort with watching his audition tape for the iconic Harry Potter series during an interview on The View. The conversation took place as part of promotional efforts for his new NBC comedy, The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins. Radcliffe, who achieved worldwide recognition for his role as the boy wizard, candidly shared his mixed feelings about revisiting his early performance.

During the interview, co-host Sunny Hostin prompted Radcliffe about his almost three-year-old son, asking whether he is aware of his father’s famous role. Radcliffe responded, “No, he knows nothing about that side of my life.” Hostin noted that it has been 25 years since Radcliffe auditioned for the role when he was just 11 years old. The hosts proceeded to play a clip of Radcliffe’s audition, eliciting a humorous reaction from the actor.

As the audition clip played, Radcliffe could be seen mouthing “It’s bad” while shaking his head. Despite the audience’s applause and encouragement, he remained critical of his younger self’s performance. He commented, “I disagree, but thank you very much… Now I can look at that and be like, it’s cute.”

Whoopi Goldberg, another co-host, joined the discussion by acknowledging Radcliffe’s growth as an actor. “You evolved it… You went from that, which, in spite of what you think, is really good, which is why you got the gig. But you’ve evolved, and that’s the beautiful thing,” she remarked, highlighting the actor’s impressive career trajectory.

While Radcliffe may be hesitant to show his son the original Harry Potter movies, he expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming HBO reboot series. In a recent appearance on The Late Show, he stated, “I’m actually delighted that when my kid grows up and is into Harry Potter, he can watch a version that is not me. I feel like watching it with your dad would be less cool. It would take you out of it.”

The actor’s reflections illuminate the profound impact of the Harry Potter franchise on his life and career. As fans around the world eagerly anticipate the new series, Radcliffe’s journey from a child actor to a celebrated star continues to resonate.
