Chicago Man Charged After Shooting Two at Walmart in Evergreen Park

UPDATE: A Chicago man has been charged following a shocking shooting that left two people injured at a Walmart in Evergreen Park, Illinois, on Wednesday afternoon. Yoseph Barnes, 20, was taken into custody after the incident, which unfolded around 2:56 PM at the store located at 2500 W. 95th St.
Eyewitnesses reported chaos as Barnes allegedly shot a 23-year-old man in the leg and a 70-year-old female bystander in the foot. According to police, the male victim was entering the store when Barnes exited a vehicle in the parking lot and pursued him while firing a fully loaded Glock 19 handgun.
Witnesses described a harrowing scene, noting that several shoppers and store security personnel witnessed the shooting, which was also captured on security cameras. After a brief scuffle with the victim, Barnes reportedly fled the scene, discarding his weapon as he ran out through a back exit. His firearm was later recovered by police.
Barnes was apprehended hiding in a garbage can in the 9300-block of Country Club Drive shortly after the shooting. He appeared in court on September 29, 2023, where a Cook County judge labeled the incident a “horrific act of violence.”
Despite suffering multiple gunshot wounds, the male victim is currently in stable condition, while the female victim has been treated and released from the hospital. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, as it appears Barnes has no known connection to his targets.
Barnes, who is a convicted felon currently on parole, was previously convicted in 2023 for possession of a machine gun. In court, his defense attorney argued for leniency, highlighting that the suspect lives with his godmother and is expecting a child soon.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and the Evergreen Park community remains shaken by this violent outburst. Officials urge anyone with additional information to come forward.
As this story develops, we will provide further updates on the legal proceedings against Barnes and the impact of this incident on the local community. Stay tuned for more breaking news.
