A high-speed crash at a busy Philadelphia intersection left two women injured Wednesday afternoon, igniting urgent community demands for immediate traffic safety improvements.
The collision occurred around 2:50 p.m. at the busy crossroads of 16th and Lombard in Center City, directly outside the Independence Charter School, which serves about 800 students.
Surveillance footage captured a silver SUV speeding down Lombard Street. The vehicle struck a Range Rover that had the green light, abruptly ejecting a passenger. Meanwhile, a pedestrian—a woman crossing the street—was forced into the wall of a nearby Jewish community center.
Witnesses quickly surrounded the scene. Mark Krull, who was driving behind the silver SUV moments before the crash, described seeing the driver lose control. “I ducked in the corner,” Krull said, adding he heard the sudden impact seconds later. His video shows neighbors rushing to aid the injured pedestrian and detaining the SUV driver until police arrived.
Two women were treated at the scene by medics, with one still hospitalized in stable condition. Rabbi Doniel Grodnitzky of Mamash Chabad, whose building sustained damage in the crash, called the victims’ survival “a miracle of God” given the violent nature of the crash.
“It’s absolutely incredible, so I’m so thankful for that,” Rabbi Grodnitzky said, focusing on the victims’ recovery.
Matt Kelley, CEO of Independence Charter School, emphasized the close call for students. “We would have been preparing to send hundreds of students right out to the corner here of 16th and Lombard,” he said, noting the school had dismissed early that day due to the chaos.
After the crash, neighbors urged Philadelphia officials to install speed bumps and other traffic calming measures along Lombard Street to prevent similar incidents. The crash site’s high foot traffic and heavy car flow underline the need for enhanced safety.
The 17th Police District is actively investigating the crash, with sources confirming the SUV driver is being probed for DUI. Authorities have not released the driver’s identity or additional details at this time.
