Freed-Hardeman University is set to host retired U.S. Air Force Major General Paul Johnson as the keynote speaker for its spring commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. on May 16 in Dryden Auditorium. A reception will immediately follow in the Brewer Sports Center.
This event marks a significant return for General Johnson, who began his college journey at Freed-Hardeman from 1976 to 1978 before earning his bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Murray State University in 1980. During his early years at Freed-Hardeman, Johnson met his wife, Patricia Gibbons, bonding through the university chorus under the direction of Kelly Doyle.
Distinguished Military Career and Honors
Johnson’s military career spanned more than three decades after he entered the U.S. Air Force in 1985. His assignments were diverse and global, including roles as an A-10 pilot and instructor and key staff positions in Stuttgart, Germany, NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, and at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
He earned a reputation for leadership commanding units across various states and countries — from a squadron in North Carolina to wings in Arizona and Kandahar, Afghanistan. His education includes graduating at the top of the Air Force Fighter Weapons School and completing a Master of Strategic Studies at Air University, where he also served on faculty.
Johnson’s combat deployments include several tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he received top U.S. military honors such as the Air Force Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross, and two Bronze Stars. These decorations spotlight his valor and service under extreme conditions.
Returning to Alma Mater with a Message of Leadership and Service
Besides a decorated military legacy, Johnson and his wife have a deep personal connection to Freed-Hardeman. Their three children — Christopher, Eric, and Jessica — are all alumni of the university, continuing the family tradition. Together, they have eight grandchildren and have lived across 10 states and three countries.
The Johnson family is also notable for their faith-based commitments. Paul Johnson serves as an elder with the Henderson Church of Christ, reflecting a lifelong engagement in spiritual leadership, having held elder roles in over a dozen congregations.
“We’re honored to welcome General Johnson back to campus,” said FHU President David R. Shannon. “His life reflects both distinguished military leadership and a deep commitment to spiritual service — an example of the kind of impact we hope our graduates will go on to make.”
The upcoming commencement speech promises to inspire Freed-Hardeman graduates and attendees with firsthand insights on leadership, sacrifice, and dedication. As Johnson returns to the campus where his journey began, his story underscores the critical role of resilience and service in shaping success.
What to Watch For
The ceremony on May 16 offers a unique opportunity for students, families, and alumni to engage with a nationally recognized military leader who bridges service to country with community and faith.
Following the address, the reception at the Brewer Sports Center will provide a chance to meet General Johnson and celebrate this milestone. His return highlights the enduring bonds between military service, education, and the values Freed-Hardeman promotes.
This event is set to be a defining moment for the university’s spring ceremony, offering fresh inspiration as graduates embark on their futures amid a complex global landscape.
