Mable Smidt was a steadfast figure whose easygoing nature and dedication to others marked her life. Born October 28, 1939, in Bliss, Nebraska, Mable Marie Harkins rose from humble beginnings alongside her five siblings to become a beloved figure in the communities she touched.
Throughout her life, Mable’s commitment to family and work was unwavering. She raised five children with her first husband, Bernard Lee Fulkerth, and was a familiar face at workplaces spanning Nebraska to Iowa and Michigan. Her three decades at establishments including Bil-Mar turkey factory and local eateries like Jo & By’s Pub and Taco House earned her lasting respect in every community she served.
Legacy of Family and Community Service
Later, Mable remarried Darryl “Cowboy” Smidt, sharing decades of adventures and affection. Even after his passing, she spoke often of him, preserving his memory with deep passion.
Survivors include her five children—Bernie, Daniel, Randy, Dean, and Tammy—as well as two stepchildren, Brenda Nattress and Mike Smidt. Her family legacy also includes nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, all inheriting her stories and values.
