Trawlerman Triumphs in Long Distance Cup at Ascot

Trawlerman reaffirmed his status as a leading contender in the staying division by winning the Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot on October 14, 2023. The Godolphin-owned horse, ridden by William Buick, started as the 5-6 favourite and showcased a strong performance over the two-mile course, finishing ahead of stablemate Sweet William by a length and a half. Al Qareem came in third, trailing by 12 lengths.
The race unfolded with Trawlerman taking the lead as the competitors rounded the final bend. Sweet William, under the guidance of Robert Havlin, attempted to close the gap but ultimately could not catch the frontrunner. Post-race, trainer John Gosden praised both horses, noting their impressive capabilities and the bond they share with the team at home.
“They are two lovely horses—one seven, one six years old—great staying horses and they are part of the family at home,” Gosden remarked. He highlighted Trawlerman’s relentless pace, stating, “When the others want to take a pull and a breather, that’s when he says, ‘no, we’re going two miles and a proper gallop.'”
Gosden acknowledged a moment of tension as Sweet William seemed poised to challenge Trawlerman, saying, “There was a moment a furlong out I thought Sweet William might get him but then he didn’t.” Looking ahead, he indicated both horses would be rested until next year, with plans for a run before the prestigious Gold Cup.
Philippa Cooper, who owns and bred Sweet William through her Normandie Stud, expressed her satisfaction with her horse’s performance. “The plan was to put him asleep at the back… Rab (Havlin) thought he was going to win but then Trawlerman just had that little bit extra,” she explained. Reflecting on Sweet William’s effort, she noted, “It’s probably a career best if you judge it on how close he got to Trawlerman.”
Cooper also shared her hopes for Sweet William’s future, indicating that he will continue racing and not be retired just yet. “He’s going to be 20 years in the paddock so I can’t retire him—he won’t be a happy hacker in retirement,” she added with a hint of humor.
The third-place finisher, Al Qareem, trained by Karl Burke for Nick Bradley Racing, also received commendation for his efforts. “He wears his heart on his sleeve and he always tries his best,” Burke said. He highlighted the significance of finishing within 12 lengths of the leading horses, and expressed optimism for next year’s campaign, stating, “He loves coming here so hopefully we can come here plenty next year.”
As the dust settles on another thrilling day of racing, Trawlerman’s victory stands as a testament to his endurance and skill, while Sweet William and Al Qareem continue to show promise for the future. With both trainers expressing excitement for the upcoming season, fans can look forward to more exhilarating performances from these remarkable horses.
