Speed Limit Slashed on Kuakini Highway for Community Safety

URGENT UPDATE: The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has just announced an immediate speed limit reduction on Kuakini Highway to enhance safety for local communities. Effective in 30 days, the speed limit will drop from 55 mph to 45 mph along the critical stretch between mile markers 113.6 and 117.1.
This decision comes as part of HDOT’s ongoing commitment to protect residents and visitors in Kona. The area encompasses vital community hubs such as Harold H. Higashihara Park, Kamakana Playground, and a nearby place of worship, making the need for safer travel paramount. Officials urge drivers to be mindful as children and the elderly frequent these locations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a safe environment for all.
“
The purpose of the speed reduction is to provide a manageable, safe, and consistent speed limit for this section of Hawaiʻi Belt Road (Route 11),”
stated HDOT in their press release. The new regulations will apply to both directions of traffic, ensuring comprehensive safety improvements for all road users.
The speed limit change is part of a broader strategy aimed at reducing serious injuries and fatalities on local roads. HDOT is also exploring additional safety measures, including roundabouts and elevated pedestrian crossings. These initiatives are designed to not only streamline traffic flow but also to foster a more secure transportation network for the Kona community.
Motorists are advised to prepare for the transition as the new signage is set to be installed within the next month. With the new regulations on the horizon, community members are encouraged to spread the word and remind each other of the importance of adhering to the updated speed limit.
Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops, and help keep our roads safe for everyone.
