Governor Newsom Blasts Trump After Shell Detonates During Marines Event
UPDATE: Tensions escalate as California Governor Gavin Newsom publicly condemns Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance following a shocking incident on October 14, 2023. An artillery shell detonated prematurely over Interstate 5 during a Marine Corps training exercise, sparking outrage and safety concerns.
The detonation occurred during a celebration marking the Marine Corps’ 250th anniversary. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the explosion damaged two vehicles, including one from Vance’s motorcade. Newsom’s press office emphasized the seriousness of the incident, stating, “The shrapnel that hit CHP vehicles came from this ordnance. It’s no small thing.” The post included a photo of the artillery device that raised alarms.
Newsom took to X to express his fury, stating, “Donald Trump and JD Vance put lives at risk to put on a show. If you want to honor our troops, open the government and pay them.” This statement reflects broader frustrations over military funding and safety practices.
Earlier this week, Newsom raised concerns about the event after MeidasTouch reported that the Marine Corps planned to use live munitions. In response, Vance’s office dismissed Newsom’s criticisms, claiming the exercise was routine and safe. “The Marine Corps says it’s an established and safe practice,” said William Martin, Vance’s communications director, to The New York Times.
However, following the explosion, Newsom is demanding accountability. His office challenged Republican leaders, stating, “You accused the Governor of overreacting when he closed a portion of the freeway to protect the public. Now we learn … live ordinance detonated early, striking a vehicle on a closed portion of the highway during the event. An apology is owed — to not just Californians, but all Americans.”
The California Highway Patrol confirmed that metal shrapnel from the detonation struck one of its vehicles, while a motorcycle in Vance’s security detail was also impacted. “This was an unusual and concerning situation,” said CHP Border Division Chief Tony Coronado. “It is highly uncommon for any live-fire or explosive training activity to occur over an active freeway. My foremost responsibility is ensuring the safety of the people of California.”
The First Marine Expeditionary Force is currently investigating the incident, maintaining that safety protocols were in place and rehearsals were conducted prior to the demonstration. “Marines fire artillery on Camp Pendleton nearly every week,” the force stated.
As the fallout continues, all eyes are on how the White House will respond. The offices of Vance and California Rep. Darrell Issa did not immediately return requests for comment. Residents and military personnel alike are left questioning the safety measures surrounding such high-stakes operations.
Stay tuned for updates as this story develops. The implications of this incident could reverberate through military practices and political accountability in the weeks to come.
