Santa Cruz Chili Cook-Off Returns with Record 55 Teams, Oct. 25

UPDATE: The highly anticipated annual Chili Cook-Off is back at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk on October 25, 2023, featuring a record-breaking 55 teams competing for cash, plaques, and bragging rights. This year promises an exciting showdown as chili enthusiasts gear up to taste a variety of meaty and vegetarian chili recipes.
The event kicks off at 10 a.m. when tasting kits go on sale for just $15, allowing attendees to sample a delicious array of chili. Each kit includes eight sample cups and a People’s Choice ballot, ensuring that everyone can have a say in crowning the best chili in Santa Cruz. The public tasting will commence at 1 p.m. and culminate with the awards ceremony at 4 p.m. at the Pirate Ship Stage.
This year, a portion of the proceeds from each tasting kit will support Haven of Hope, a vital nonprofit organization providing essential support services to current and former foster youth since 1998. Attendees can enjoy chili while contributing to a meaningful cause, making this event not just tasty but impactful.
Among the competitors, the defending champions include the Ric’s Righteous team from San Jose, who won both the Professional Vegetarian and Professional Meat categories last year, the Smokin Hot Chili team from Campbell, which claimed first in the Amateur Meat category, and the Veggin’ Out team from Sunnyvale, who triumphed in the Amateur Vegetarian category. With such fierce competition, chili lovers are in for a treat.
Admission to the Boardwalk is free, making it accessible for everyone to join in this delicious celebration. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to secure their tasting kits and experience the vibrant atmosphere filled with flavors and friendly rivalry.
